Improved pedestrianisation of St Mary and St Thomas Streets
Weymouth Town Council re-install the physical barriers that were put in place in St Mary Street and St Thomas Street during July/August 2017.
The reinstallation of these barriers is required due to the number of vehicles observed accessing both streets during the day, contrary to the existing Traffic Regulation Order (TRO), giving increasing concerns for public safety and the wellbeing of town centre businesses. This project is being progressed in partnership with Dorset Council and working with the support of Weymouth BID.
The existing Traffic Regulation Order restricts all vehicles entering both pedestrian zones between 10:30 and 17:30. Between 17:30 and 10:30 only taxis and goods vehicles undertaking deliveries/loading can enter the zones.
Private vehicles cannot access either street (pedestrian zone) at any time.
Traffic bollards will be installed in St Mary Street opposite the King Statue and at the junction of Bond Street opposite Pandora and at the bottom of St Mary Street. A gate will be reinstalled in St Thomas Street at the junction with School Street, A gate has been installed at the bottom of St Thomas Street and bollards at the bottom of St Mary St. Please note: the gates will be locked promptly at 10.30am and re-open at 5.30pm. We have arranged for the opening and closing of the bollards/gate each day by a local contractor from the 1st July 2019 onwards.
We therefore request that:
1. All staff are made aware that no private (general public and/or staff) vehicles can enter either street at any time; 2. You advise your supply chain, delivery companies and services that both streets will be physically closed every day between 10:30 and 17:30; 3. All vehicles must have departed both streets by 10:30 each day and; 4. Any vehicle entering either pedestrian zone contrary to the Traffic Regulation Order will be liable to further legal action and/or a fine.
It is recognised that on some occasions that emergency work at your business may be necessary. Should access be required in either street during for general or emergency work, please contact Weymouth Town Council by telephone on 01305 239839.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for your cooperation and for helping to make our town centre a safe and secure environment for residents, businesses and visitors.
